This home is for a couple and their young son in the Coromandel township. They are ceramic artists and have a familiarity and love of clay. Because of this it was appropriate to adopt bricks, that universal, cost-effective, human scaled building material for their modest new home.

The formal inspiration for this home on this unique site came from the stone sentinels in the adjacent cemetery. The small scale, vertical ‘towers’ are a response to the numerous white headstones on its southern boundary – it broke up the scale of the house and bagging and painting it an “off white” gave an immediate connection to the locale.

The house is sustainable with high level of thermal mass, insulation and natural light, a prerequisite for these two self-proclaimed greenies.
