The project was an extensive alteration to an existing beachfront property. The existing building was gutted and almost completely rebuilt, and expanded. The existing vernacular structure was retained and local techniques of detailing and finish were used wherever possible.

A series of open and breezy âburesâ are arranged around sanded courtyards, providing a direct and literal ‘holiday’ mode of living. A resort-like atmosphere is evoked with the independent pavilions, each attached to a private bathroom and courtyard shower.

The build was not easy – all materials had to be taken by barge to the island, being loaded and offloaded by hand. The harsh marine environment dictated that all elements were of the highest quality including the giant bag of stainless steel screws that Simon took in his carry-on luggage through from New Zealand.
