NZIA Local Award 2024 / Gisborne/Hawke’s Bay / Winner
In association with Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, we conceived this home as a faceted geometric form responding to the undulations in its natural cliff-top context, and sensitively nestling within it. The design recognises the natural landscape by referring and deferring to it, maintaining the visual coherence of the landform. A strong connection with ‘land’ and ‘sea’ achieves a significant cultural linkage with the interior and exterior becoming one. Hips and valleys generate the roof, lifting and dropping in response to spaces beneath and pitch forward above where sunshade and shelter are required. The house is clad with natural recessive materials – copper, concrete, and stone to acknowledge the colours and textures of the landscape. Layering and stratifying the existing landscape referenced by building form and finish.
